Jim Doorley, M.A., Clinical Sport Psychology Consultant

Jim’s interest in performance psychology evolved through music. A drummer since age 9, he was accepted into the percussion program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst before switching his academic focus to psychology. For four years, Jim performed with the UMass Drumline, regarded as one of the top collegiate marching percussion sections in the country. He went on to perform with The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, one of the oldest and most successful active drum corps in North America. During graduate school, he was a percussion instructor for George Mason University’s competitive indoor drumline and played drums for D.C.-area artist Cat Janice, whose songs have been featured on Country Music Television and Netflix.

Jim’s passion for performing led to a strong interest in sport and performance psychology. He worked with athletes at the Inova Sports Medicine Concussion Program, George Mason University, and the United States Naval Academy. Using empirically supported approaches (e.g., CBT, mindfulness-based interventions), he enjoys helping performers respond effectively to anxiety and self-criticism, maintain focus in high-stakes situations, bounce back from injuries, and rediscover the passion that first drew them to their craft. He also has ample experience providing psychotherapy for clinical issues in a community mental health clinic, outpatient psychiatry department, college counseling center, and in various medical settings. With all of Jim’s clients, he strives to embody the core factors that make psychotherapy work: a strong therapeutic alliance, empathic understanding, non-judgment, collaboration around therapeutic goals, and cultural competence.

Currently, Jim is a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology at George Mason University and a clinical fellow in psychology at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital. He works under the supervision of Dr. Sharon Chirban and looks forward to supporting clients of all backgrounds at a reduced fee.
